Hi, I'm Elayne, and I am host of the Support is Sexy podcast for women entrepreneurs -- which has more than 700 episodes and features interviews with 450+ inspiring women entrepreneurs around the world. I am also creator of the FREE FACEBOOK GROUP, Support is Sexy Mastermind -- an online community of generous women entrepreneurs, who are committed to -- you guessed it -- showing up to support each other! My mission is to remind you that having it all doesn't mean doing it all alone and that support is a key to success! Here, I share tools, resources, workshops, courses and challenges that will help you build, grow and and love YOUR business!
First, a quick question: Have you ever thought about “that thing?” That thing that you’ve always loved to do, that came naturally to you, but that you never knew could be an actual business or career? For me, “that thing” is writing. I have been in love with writing and storytelling for as long as I can remember! Before I even knew how to write as a child, I’d scribble on paper and bang out-of-sequence letters on an old typewriter (remember those?) to create my own “stories.” Writing and storytelling was my passion and I didn’t know it. Fortunately, my mother has proof of my earlier works, which she collected and still holds precious.
What’s “that thing” for you, and how are you sharing that gift with the world?
And, be honest, when it comes to your passion, are you playing full out or are you playing small? If the phrase, “playing small” struck a sensitive nerve, trust me, I understand.
I have been fortunate to have a career as a journalist that spans more than 20 years and includes top editorial positions at media powerhouses such as Conde Nast, People, Martha Stewart Living, Essence, HuffPost and more. I have appeared as an expert guest on the Today show, Nightline, CNN, VH1, BET and Inside Edition, and I have been a guest speaker at the United Nations, Columbia University, Spelman College, Howard University, NYU, the Women's President's Organization and the Essence Music Festival to name a few.
Yet I didn’t realize, until 2015, that I had been playing small.
See, in addition to my passion for storytelling, I longed to be an entrepreneur — to create something of my own that contributed to women in a significant way. I dabbled with side businesses throughout my career; but I didn’t get up the nerve to take the big leap until 2014, when I left my executive editorial job and my six-figure salary to work on a video platform I created to tell the stories of diverse women.
But this is no glamorous story about my big leap. Let’s just say my leap was more of a stumble. In fact I stumbled, I fumbled and many times I fell flat on my face. And during that period of my life, I felt isolated and on my own as a woman entrepreneur trying to find my way as an individual and a new businessperson. I often felt lost and defeated, I couldn’t figure out how I was going to make my big dreams a reality and a part of me didn’t believe that I could actually do it.
What turned things around for me was a period in 2015 when I did some deep personal development work that helped me unravel my limiting beliefs, let go of the “how” and learn to ask for and accept support from an empowered place. That mindset shift changed everything for me. I began to see myself, my business and my possibilities differently!
This new mindset gave me permission to pivot my business and opened up the space for me to create that supportive community for other women entrepreneurs, Support is Sexy, which includes a beloved podcast, an online mastermind, and an upcoming book with HarperCollins Leadership to remind ambitious women like you that having it all doesn’t mean doing it all alone! It helped me create the businesses I have today that allow me to fulfill my dream of working from anywhere as I travel the world, live in different countries and experience many cultures. And it showed me how I can incorporate all of my previous experience into my passion for helping women just like you level up your mindset, manifest your dreams and launch a business you love!
I’m happy that you’re here! I hope you’ll take a look at the courses and resources I offer, and see how I may support you on your journey to launching a business you love. It may sound lofty, but trust me, with the right mindset, smart strategies and ongoing support, it’s possible!
